Today lets look at the Shallow (90) concept from 2005. There are images below that show each way that we ran Shallow that year. This was a 90's concept. Any 90 numbered concept at the time meant it was a dropback pass with the QB taking a 3 or 5 step drop (which ever was comfortable for them).
Breaking down the concept from a fundamental standpoint, no matter the formation, we always had a shallow route from one side and the dig route coming from the opposite side. The RB would always release to the side that the shallow route came from. The post route was always on the same side as the shallow and the go route was always on the same side as the dig. The QB's progression started the pre-snap reads of the Go route or the Post route. If he liked his matchup or the defensive was giving a lot of grass in those areas, he could go there immediately. If none of the pre-snap routes were there he would work to his normal progress which was the shallow route first, the dig second, and finally to running back on the arrow route.
Ace formation was the base 2x2 formation in the offense in 2005 with the Y and H inside and the Z and X on the outside. In the pictures below, for H and X Shallow the RB would lineup on the left side because he would always be releasing to that side of the shallow.
Dart was also a 2x2 formation, it simply switched the H to outside and the X inside on the left side. Y and Z Shallow were ran out of dart because we always wanted the X receiver to be the dig route runner. Also the back would line up on the right so that he could release to the side of the Y/Z.
Drawn up is also two different ways to run it out of empty. It was formation'd to where the back would always be on the side of the shallow route. The same rules apply, just out of a 5 wide set.
This is a great play against many different coverages. If you get man coverage, you have the shallow route crossing the field and putting the defender in a trail position along with one on one opportunities with the go route and post route. If it is zone, you have the high low combination working with the shallow and the dig coming over top of it. In a zone look, we would talk to our QB's about the 2 different windows to throw the dig route - 1. right when he sticks his foot in the ground 2. when he clears the mike backer. Depending on how much you trust your players, you can get the dig route runner the option to sit it down in the middle if the mike drops deep in a Tampa 2 look.
I know there have been tons of ways that you guys have ran shallow. Look forward to hearing everyone's comments and tweaks!
