For this week’s message board post I want to talk about trick plays. We really like to try to run 1-2 trick plays a game. This keeps the defense on their toes knowing that you are not afraid to run them. It is also good to get them on film because every one that you run, your next opponent has to practice it. The more practice time they spend on your trick plays, the less they can spend on everything else you do on a consistent basis.
In the email I attached the video of a trick play that we ran successfully in the 2016 Hawaii Bowl. The drawing of the play is listed below. This was a unique big set for us. 3000 Black was the formation - meaning we had 2 extra OL come in the game at TE and our B back (blocking back) in the backfield on the left side. We wanted to use motion with it so we started our H behind the right TE and motioned him across the formation to the boundary. Slice was the run call that we had up front but because of the flea flicker tag, iit told our OL that it was a full slide protection with our B back fitting on the backside edge giving it a split zone action look. We then handed the ball off to our F who had an aiming point of the outside leg of the left TE. He took 3 hard steps to sell the run while the QB relocated outside of the hash because of the slide protection moving that way. The H ran a crack stutter corner - he gave the illusion that he was going to block the safety, stutter, and then get on the corner route. This was a very unique way of running the flea flicker and was different from the traditional way of handing it to the F up the middle.
Trick plays don’t always have to be a big elaborate schemed play. A lot of times they are as simple as the reverse play that everyone has ran since they were playing Pee Wee. I wanted to generate some discussion and talk about any trick plays that you guys have ran or seen that have been successful.
